Yoga Sutra
Chanting for Yoga Teachers and Students
Learn to chant the Yoga
Sutras of Patanjali in Sanskrit
All yoga traditions hearken back
to Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. They describe the nature of mind,
the path to practice, the fruits of practice, and the path to
freedom. Written 2000 years ago, they are completely
relevant to our lives today, guiding us as we work to reduce our own
suffering and that of others, to deal with the obstacles of the
mind, to have clean relationships with others and our environment,
to deal with anxiety and depression, and to foster clarity in our
own vision. In yogic tradition, the Yoga Sutras were taught
through listening to the teacher and repeating what you heard.
The Sutras were learned by heart in Sanskrit before their meaning
was discussed. Learning to chant the Sutras in Sanskrit will
deepen your entire yoga practice and help to bring it more into your
daily life.
In this class you will learn:
1.How to support your voice.
As your voice becomes stronger and clearer, you will find yourself
enjoying the sound of your voice.
2. Sanskrit pronunciation, along
with the linking of words.
3. How pitch, meter and emphasis
are used in the Sutras.
4. To chant. Even if you
think you can't sing, you will find yourself chanting.
5. How the Sutras can help you in
your everyday life.
You will experience intensity
of focus, a change in energy and sense of well-being, a growing
curiosity about the meaning of the Sutras, an improvement in memory
retention, and a sense of inner silence and peace.
Dates: May 4, May 18,
June 8, June 22, and June 29,2008. 10:30 a.m. -

Cost is $12 per session or $50
for 5 sessions.

Two Workshops to Choose from, or Stay Two
Weeks and Come to Both.
Week 1: (February 14-21) We
will focus on asana (postures) and pranayama (breath), developing a
personal practice that meets your unique and individual needs. We
will weave in relevant Yoga Sutras to intensify the practice and
experience it physically, energetically and on the mental and
emotional levels as well. Beginners are welcome along with more
experienced practitioners.
Week 2: (February 21-28) We
will focus on the third chapter of the Yoga Sutras and learn to
chant much of it in Sanskrit. We will explore the concepts around
the stages of meditation, the resulting siddhis or abilities
and the pitfalls contained therein. Chanting in Sanskrit is itself
a meditation that helps each of us develop prolonged focus,
sharpened listening skills and a deep silence within. We will use
asana and pranayama as preparation for chanting. Some prior
exposure to the Yoga Sutras is desirable, or at least an intense
curiosity.
Accommodations:
We will stay at
Casa Lalita, a comfortable and calming yoga center. It offers 6
rooms for double or single occupancy and a beautiful yoga room on
the third floor which overlooks the Caribbean Sea just one block
away. Casa Lalita features an outdoor kitchen with
bottled water
for cooking and drinking, hammocks inviting you to relax amidst
tropical flowers, and outdoor eating space. Each room features
tiled floor, private bath, ceiling fan, small refrigerator and a
door opening into the garden area. A rooftop area provides a
breathtaking view of the ocean to the east and sunsets over the
mangroves to the west—an incredible space for an early morning yoga
practice!
Schedule:
Each week begins
on Saturday evening and ends the following Saturday morning.
Wednesdays are free for you to immerse yourself in the culture or
nature—visit the Mayan pyramids at Tulum, swim in a cenote, snorkel
or scuba dive at the second longest coral reef in the world (just
200 yards offshore) or bask on the beach and swim in the ocean.
Puerto Morelos still retains its quaint nature as a small fishing
village where you can get around on foot, by bicycle or by taxi.
There are interesting local shops, a good bookstore and a variety of
restaurants to fit any budget and taste. All offer an opportunity
to practice your Spanish with the villagers. Massage and bodywork
are available nearby. We will gather to practice at 9 in the morning
and again in the late afternoon for 2 to 3-hour sessions. On three
days we will brunch together in the garden and on two days, we will
gather together for dinner. For other meals, you can cook in the
outdoor kitchen or try out local fare in one of the many small cafes
and restaurants.
