Mission of Riverbend Yoga Studio

Riverbend Yoga Studio was created to share the yoga teachings of T. Krishnamacharya and his son, T.K.V. Desikachar, adapted for students in the western world. This tradition recognizes that each student comes to yoga with unique conditions, circumstances and goals, and that instruction must be tailored to meet the individual's needs.

We recognize that people come to yoga for a broad range of reasons:

  • stress reduction
  • a need to learn how to relax
  • a need to learn how to stretch effectively
  • a desire to strengthen an area of the body
  • to aid recovery from an injury (broken bones, pulled muscles, back strain, knee injury)
  • to aid recovery from or to cope with illness (heart problems, cancer, fibromyalgia, problems of the digestive or respiratory systems)
  • to deal with pain
  • to loosen the hold of anxiety or depression
  • to deepen their spiritual roots
  • their doctor recommended it

Yoga offers a variety of tools to work with these conditions: postures, breathing practices, the use of sound, self-reflection, appropriate diet, rest, and exercise, the study of the Yoga Sutras and yoga philosophy, and meditation. At the heart of our teaching are the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, an ancient text that defines yoga as a training of the mind and guides the reader in bringing yoga into everyday life.

We endeavor to create a friendly, non-dogmatic environment at the studio, open to all who wish to learn postures (asana), breathing (pranayama), meditation, the use of sound and the study of the Yoga Sutras. We offer classes, workshops and individual instruction to accommodate each student whatever his/her goal. It is our goal to assist each student’s quest for personal health and spiritual well-being through yoga and related mind/body practices.
