Asana, Pranayama and Meditation (Maggie Kessell)

Asana practice strengthens the back and purifies the body systems, preparing the body and mind to sit quietly and focus on the breath in pranayama. Focusing on the breath further calms and directs the mind, preparing it for meditation. In this class we will spend an hour with asana to prepare for simple pranayama techniques leading to meditation.
This class is suitable for anyone with six months experience in asana and a desire to experience the deep mind (citta) more intimately.

Recovery Yoga (Beth Berila)

Learn to embody your recovery through yoga. Addictions, codependency, and disordered eating can rob us of our creativity, our freedom, and our loved ones. Yoga can help us reclaim our bodies and our lives. By helping us cultivate greater self-awareness and compassion for ourselves and others, yoga can help us heal. This class will help participants learn to embody recovery principles, so that we can practice qualities on the mat that will help us in our recovery lives off the mat. These qualities include nonjudgemental awareness, patience, self-care, self-honoring, and the ability to sit with cravings and discomfort. Participants will cultivate the self-reflection to learn how these qualities feel in our bodies. We can then make informed choices about which qualities we want to cultivate and which we want to let go.

Restorative/Yin Yoga (Stephanie Mauceri)

Restorative Yoga and Yin Yoga are different in subtle ways but are quite complimentary within the same practice. Making use of props, attention to breathing and poses held for prolonged periods of time, Restorative Yoga is a gentle and therapeutic modality that promotes the effects of conscious relaxation in the body as well as the mind. Yin Yoga addresses the lubrication and creation of space in the connective tissues at major joint sites, or at areas not accessed in a ‘yang’/movement oriented Yoga practice. At River Garden, Yin poses may be held from 1-5 minues, but in Yin Yoga, the key is in the sensation – navigating it with the movement of the breath. And, in understanding how certain physical sensations correlate to acupressure meridians -- which may actually fortify major organ groups. This holiday season, the liver line will be highlighted and focused on in the Yin practice – don’t miss it! (Suitable for all levels. But if brand-new to Yoga, please have a little yoga experience before attending.)
